New Researcher Symposium
ACM SIGMOD 2010

Tuesday June 8, 2010
18:00 - 20:30 pm
Cosmopolitan CD, Indianpolis Hyatt, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

The goal of this year's symposium is to give graduate students and junior researchers advice on "managing medium-term and long-term career risks". Our first panel will cover topics pertaining to medium-term career development, such as how to create visibility before graduating, how to choose a suitable career path, and how to obtain early feedback on performance at work. Our second panel will focus on long-term career development, discussing issues such as the data management field in the long term, the change of community, the way we will train students, the kind of work that will be done in industry and academia, and the job opportunities in the future. Two panels will share perspectives on their personal experiences with these issues at different points of their research careers. Although primarily targeting at new researchers, we believe that these panels will be interesting to everyone in our community. The symposium is highly informal. So, we hope that you come with any questions you have, and ask them either during the panels or during the open-floor discussion at the end of the symposium. Everyone is welcome!
