Admissions |
Admission to the MajorThe Department is proud of its strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and is eager for new students to join our major. The program does not require prior programming experience, such as high school AP courses in computer science. Students who are interested in the major may apply at any time. Some students are admitted directly to the major when they apply for admission to the University. The rest apply after they have enrolled in CMPSCI 121 and MATH 131. Students demonstrating a sufficient background or level of achievement are admitted immediately, or the department will review the applicant's courses for the current or next semester and set specific goals for admission. An application form may be obtained from the Computer Science departmental office in Room 100 Computer Science Building and should be returned there when completed. Who isn't admitted when they apply? Admission is held up only when a student struggles in beginning courses, making success in the major unlikely. Students who are are not admitted, or who fail to meet the conditions set for admission, are welcome to reapply in later semesters. Transfer students interested in computer science should apply directly to the University through the Office of Transfer Affairs, which will then forward the application materials to the Department of Computer Science for consideration for admission directly into the major. Transfer students who are not directly admitted to the computer science major but are accepted by the University may apply for admission using the procedure described above. Students who wish to apply to the Second Bachelor's Degree Program in computer science should contact the University Admissions Office.
