Admissions |
Admission to the MajorThe School of Computer Science is proud of its strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and is eager for new students to join our major. The program does not require prior programming experience, such as high school AP courses in computer science. Some students are admitted directly to the major when they apply for admission to the University. The rest apply after they have enrolled in at least CMPSCI 121 and MATH 131. Applications are considered for the major three times a year with deadlines preceding Spring and Fall registration periods and prior to the end of summer term:
During the review process, students demonstrating a sufficient background or level of achievement are admitted immediately, or the school will review the applicant's courses for the current or next semester and set specific goals for admission. The application form is completed and emailed to CSapply [at] cs [dot] umass [dot] edu for review by Prof. Roderic Grupen, Undergraduate Program Director (UPD). Applicants will be notified of all decisions via @student email. The School has a limit of 2 re-applications to the CS Major, so with that in mind, it is important to do a good job on the contract courses when a contract is given ("Applicant On Contract"). Who isn't admitted when they apply? Admission is held up only when a student struggles in beginning courses, making success in the major unlikely. Students who are not admitted because of failure to meet the conditions set for admission, are welcome to re-apply, according to the following eligibility rules: 1) re-application limit not exceeded, and 2) consecutive applications are required. Transfer students interested in computer science should apply directly to the University through the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Transfer students who are not directly admitted to the computer science major but are accepted by the University may apply for admission using the procedure described above. Students who wish to apply to the Second Bachelor's Degree Program in computer science should contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
