"Too much information: Helping people keep their private data to themselves."

Abstract:
Internet and mobile computing technologies have created countless
opportunities for data sharing through popular and emerging applications
like peer-to-peer file-sharing and friend-finder services. However,
these applications can also lead to damaging breaches of users' privacy
if the data they export is improperly managed. This talk will briefly
describe two ongoing projects at Duke called TightLip and SmokeScreen
that are focused on providing better tools for managing shared data.
TightLip is designed to prevent servers from leaking sensitive data due
to access control misconfigurations, while SmokeScreen tries to provide
mobile users with fine-grained control over who can record their presence.
