Jim Kurose

Background:  PhD Computer Science, Columbia University (1984), PA Physics, Wesleyan University (1978). Professor Kurose joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts as an Assistant Professor in 1984, Associate Professor (1991), Full Professor (1996), and Distinguished Professor (2004). He was a Visiting Scientist at IBM Research during the 1990/91 academic year, and at INRIA and at EURECOM, both in Sophia Antipolis, France, during the 1997/98 academic year.

Research:  Professor Kurose's reseach interests are in the areas of  computer networks, network and operating system support for servers, and modeling and performance evaluation. In the networking area, his research focusses on multicast communication (reliable transport, congestion control, active networking), Internet performance measurement and modeling (network loss and delay characterization, as well as network protocol performance), and neworking and operating system support for continuous media (audio, video) applications.  He is also interested in the development of asynchronous learning materials and pedagogy, particularly the use of Internet-based multimedia material.

Activities and awards:  Dr. Kurose was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking is a past Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Communications. He has been active in the program committees for IEEE Infocom, ACM SIGCOMM, and ACM SIGMETRICS conferences, as well as several other conferences. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society.  Professor Kurose takes great pride in his awards for teaching.  He is the nine-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the National Technological University (NTU), the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award of the Northeast Association of Graduate Schools, and the recipient of the prestigious IEEE/CS Taylor Booth Education Award (2001). He received the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council (MTC) Workforce Development Leader of the Year Award (2002), UMass President's Service Award (2002), the UMass Amherst NSM Outstanding Service Award (2002), and the IEEE Communication Society Service Appreciation Award (2002). Professor Kurose also received the Outstanding Investigator Award from the DARPA Active Networks Program (2002). He has been the recipient of a GE Fellowship, IBM Faculty Development Award, and a Lilly Teaching Fellowship. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi.
