Scott F. Kaplan

Adjunct Assistant Professor, Computer Science
Assistant Professor, Mathematics and Computer Science, Amherst College

Virtual memory management and file system caching, multi-programmed dynamic VMM, garbage collection and allocation interaction with VMM, reference trace collection, reference trace reduction, prefetching, page replacement policies, cluster/grid resource management, and data compression.

Background: Ph.D., Computer Science, University of Texas at Austin (1999), B.A., Computer Science, Amherst College (1995). Professor Kaplan joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Amherst College in 1999, and has been working as an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst since 2004. While on leave, he has also worked as a Visiting Researcher at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center.

Research: Professor Kaplan's primary research focus lies in OS- and run-time-level memory management. His current interests include fair sharing virtual memory systems, prefetching and clustering, heap-size adaptive garbage collectors, and memory management for grid/cluster computing.

Activities and awards: Professor Kaplan's recent professional service includes acting as a Referee for the Performance Evaluation Review and served on the Program Committee of the USENIX Annual Technical Conference. He recently received National Science Foundation, Collaborative Research: A Five-College Partnership for Information Assurance Education, award and was acknowledged in the Faculty Research Award Program for Amherst College in January of 2004.
