Areas of Interest

The Department has three primary areas of concentration: computer systems (SYS), theory of computation (THRY), and artificial intelligence and robotics (AI). These areas overlap to a significant degree and students are encouraged to cross boundaries as much as possible in order to mix theory and practice. Refer to "About The UMass Computer Science Department"

The application asks students to identify the area(s) corresponding to their primary interests. Please select the area that most accurately reflects your interests from among SYS, THRY, AI, or UND (undecided).

If you want to be more specific, please do so AFTER declaring one of the four. For Example: AI: NLP. By filling out this information, you will help to ensure that the appropriate Admissions Committee faculty members will view your application.
