Graduation with Honors

Many Computer Science majors are also members of Commonwealth College, the University's honors college. Students meeting the appropriate requirements may receive their bachelor's degree with honors, and students in Commonwealth College have access to additional courses, advising, and activities. Requirements for the departmental honors track in Computer Science may be downloaded from this page, and specific questions on them should be referred to Commonwealth College advisors. Along with Commonwealth College's general requirements, Computer Science students must take:

  • One Computer Science honors course at any level, with grade B or better.
  • One Computer Science honors course at the 300 level or higher, with grade B or better.
  • A CMPSCI 499Y Honors Research course with grade of B+ or better (A- or A for magna cum laude, A- or A for summa cum laude.)
  • A CMPSCI 499T Honors Thesis or 499P Honors Project course with grade of B+ or better (A- or A for magna, A- or A for summa.)

Most Computer Science honors courses are one-credit seminars attached to regular courses for majors. These are usually open to any student taking the accompanying course, whether in Commonwealth College or not.

Students are admitted to Commonwealth College either by invitation on entering the University or on application once here. In general, any student with a 3.2 or better GPA is eligible.
