The Computer Science Minor

The computer science department now offers a minor in computer science. While the minor is most appropriate for students in math, science, engineering, or business, it is open to all students at the university. The nine courses that comprise the minor provide a coherent introduction to the science of computing. These courses are identified below.

Requirements for the Computer Science Minor

Preliminary Courses:

  • MATH 131-132 Calculus I and II
  • CmpSci 121 Introduction to Problem Solving Using the Computer (or 191B)
  • CmpSci 191B Introduction to Java II
  • CmpSci 187 Programming with Data Structures

Required Courses:

  • CmpSci 201 Architecture and Assembly Language Programming
  • CmpSci 250 Introduction to Computation
  • CmpSci 287 Programming Language Paradigms

Elective Courses:
Any two regular Computer Science courses, numbered 300 or above, except CmpSci 305 (405 prior to Spring 1999). Note: A grade of C or better (C- grades in or before the Spring 2006 semester are acceptable) is required in all courses used to satisfy the minor, including the preliminary courses.

Departmental Tracking

The Department requires that students pursuing a minor in Computer Science complete a "Departmental Tracking for the CMPSCI Minor" form*. This process will aid the department with providing the best service in terms of course registration to our minors.

University Declaration of An Academic Minor

Academic minors are declared when the course work for the minor has been completed by the student (or, in the semester prior to the student's graduation, if course work related to the minor is being completed in his/her final semester). To declare a minor, a student must complete the "Declaration of An Academic Minor" form* which must be returned to the Records Office (207 Whitmore) before the student's graduation. A signature of an authorized representative of the department certifying completion of the minor must be obtained.

*Contact the Main Office, Computer Science Building, Room 100, to obtain either of these forms.
