Undergraduate Advising During Fall 2009

The best place to find your academic advisor assignment is on SPIRE. If you have two CMPSCI advisors listed in SPIRE, it is because you have been assigned a substitute advisor for this semester. The list below shows substitute advisors for faculty on leave or on sabbatical this semester.

If your advisor is: Please Contact:
Eliot Moss
David Mix-Barrington
Andrew McCallum Yanlei Diao
Mark Corner
Deepak Ganesan
David Jensen Neil Immerman
Hava Siegelmann
Rui Wang
W. Bruce Croft
Brian Levine

You can contact your advisor any time during the semester to ask for help and advice. Please do, we'd love to hear from you. You are also welcome to contact Prof. David Mix-Barrington (Chief Undergraduate Advisor) or Prof. Brian Levine (Undergraduate Program Director). Prof. Levine is also the Honors Coordinator for Commonwealth College students, and he is the BDIC Coordinator. Prof. Robbie Moll (Associate Chair for Academics) is always a good choice to getting advice as well.

Registration Counseling Period for Spring 2010 classes is scheduled for November 5–12, 2009. Contact your advisor using email to make an appointment to meet on or after November 5. If you are unable to meet with your assigned advisor during the counseling period or at another convenient time, you may attend the Counseling Meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, November 9, 3:30-4:30, 151 Computer Science Bldg.

Fall 2009 General Appointment Schedule for Confirmed Registration:

Seniors (87 credits and above) Nov 12-13
Juniors (57-86 credits) Nov 18-19
Sophomores (27-56 credits) Nov 23-24
Freshmen (26 credits and below) Nov 30-Dec 1

Q: What is a RAC Hold and why do I have one?
A: A RAC is a Registration Approval Code and the hold in SPIRE prevents you from registering until you have been advised. The Computer Science Dept. requires advising, and therefore uses the RAC process to make sure that you communicate with an advisor, either directly, via email, or if no advisor has been assigned, by attending the Counseling Meeting.

Primary CMPSCI majors (BS-CMPSCI) cannot register in SPIRE without a RAC Hold release.  Secondary CMPSCI majors (SM-CMPSCI) should see their advisor for counseling but will not receive a RAC Hold from our Department.

Q: We cannot register for any classes at all until the RAC Hold is released? Or is this just CMPSCI courses?
A: You need the RAC Hold released to register for all classes. The RAC Hold is required by the CMPSCI department so that you will get advising prior to enrolling in classes.
