Benessa Defend

I am a fourth year PhD Candidate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My advisor is Professor Kevin Fu in the PRISMS lab. I am also a member of RFID CUSP. I am currently attending the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, Japan, where I am supported by a National Security Education Program Boren Fellowship. During 2005-2008 my graduate studies were supported by a Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship.

During the Fall 2007 semester, I was a visiting researcher at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. I worked with Professor Sozo Inoue, with whom I also worked during Summer 2006 when I participated in the NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes Program.

I received my BS in Computer Science in May 2005 from Austin Peay State University. In 2002 I graduated from Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School for Health Sciences and Engineering.
