Research Interests

Over the years, Prof. Sitaraman's research has centered on fundamental theoretical issues in the design and use of parallel and distributed systems, and communication networks. His current research is motivated by the grand goal of enabling the Internet to evolve into a mission-critical medium for human communication. Specifically, he is interested in algorithms and architectures of very-large-scale distributed systems for delivering reliable, scalable, secure, high-performance, and low-cost services on the Internet.

  • Internet Services. Web and Streaming content delivery. Overlay network design. Global traffic management. Cost-Performance optimizations and tradeoffs. Large-scale empirical evaluation of the structure and performance of the Internet.
  • Communication. Interprocessor communication in parallel systems. Routing messages with timing constraints. Wireless networks. Circuit-switching and wormhole routing algorithms. Performance analysis of communication protocols.
  • Fault Tolerance. Algorithms to reconfigure faulty networks. Fault-tolerant communication. Fundamental limitations on network fault tolerance.
