Dave Stemple is Professor Emeritus in the Computer Science Department of the University of Massachusett at Amherst. The title emeritus is thought by some to mean without merit, but actually means spent, used up, or played out, all of which apply to this pilgrim. Email: stemple@cs.umass.edu. I am also an Honorary Professor of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews.

I have retired as UMass Chair of the Computer Science Department; Bruce Croft is the current Chair. His email is croft@cs.umass.edu.

I was involved from 1960 in the development of compilers, operating systems and database management systems in industry and at the University of Massachusetts, where I worked in the academic computing center from 1966 to 1980. In 1981 I became a professor in the Computer Science Department. My main research dealt with some of the problems of developing complex database systems. I, along with students, Tim Sheard, Subhasish Mazumdar, and Leo Fegaras, concentrated on the specification of database systems and the mechanical reasoning that is required to assure that specifications have their intended properties.

Since retiring as Chair of the Department in 1998, I have worked as an ornithologist concentrating on the song behaviors of certain montane thrushs from the Andes to the Alps. See the link above for details of this work.

I am webmaster for my wife Jane Yolen, which takes up quite a bit of my retirement time.

I am a big fan of The Tim Malloys.
